Staying innovative requires continuous development, a creative culture and global collaboration. Hong Kong fosters all of this, helping us cultivate, attract and retain the diverse talent needed to expand our technologies across markets.
Founded in 1993, Digital Domain has delivered visual effects for hundreds of blockbuster films, TV series, commercials, video games and immersive experiences. Its pioneering work in virtual humans — digital characters with emotional expressiveness and interactive capabilities — combines machine learning and virtual reality. Drawing on extensive motion-capture databases and AI, the company sees opportunities well beyond entertainment from its Hong Kong headquarters, extending into education, banking, elderly care and tourism.
William Wong, Chairman of the Board at Digital Domain, explained: “AI is reshaping the creative landscape. At Digital Domain, we embrace these changes as opportunities for reinvention, and Hong Kong provides the ideal ecosystem for us to embrace these changes. Integrating AI into post-production and short-form content, while expanding virtual human applications, enhances productivity, efficiency and creativity. These are strategic commitments designed to drive measurable value.”
Hong Kong — a Strategic Base for Innovation
As a global innovation hub and creative capital, Hong Kong provides Digital Domain with access to Asia’s fast-growing media and entertainment sector while bridging the East and West. With its strategic base in Hong Kong, the company combines Western creative expertise with Asian market insights, leveraging multinational teams to scale AI and virtual human technologies worldwide.
Wong emphasised that the city’s diverse talent pool is a competitive advantage: “Staying innovative requires continuous development, a creative culture and global collaboration. Hong Kong fosters all of this, helping us cultivate, attract and retain the diverse talent needed to expand our technologies across markets.”
Innovate for Inspiration and Collaboration
In 2025, the company’s commitment to social responsibility through human-centred innovation was exemplified when Digital Domain created an AI virtual human for Tszkin Chen, a Hong Kong teenager living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This project empowered Chen to share his voice and experience with the world, demonstrating the power of technology to inspire and connect community.
Digital Domain partners with InvestHK and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks to accelerate research and development initiatives and industry alliances. By utilising government resources and Hong Kong’s innovation ecosystem, the company works closely with academic institutions and industry experts to explore new business models and stay aligned with market needs.
Wong concluded: “I extend my sincere thanks to InvestHK for partnering with us from the very beginning. We remain committed to strengthening our core VFX business by integrating advanced AI-driven techniques and expanding applications, while strategically reviewing our product mix to optimise value creation.”
