Equinix Anchors Asia-Pacific Regional Headquarters in Hong Kong for Digital Growth

Equinix Joanne Hon S
Joanne Hon, Managing Director, Hong Kong, Equinix
Hong Kong’s role as a financial, business and connectivity centre, together with its links to the GBA, was an important consideration in our decision to continue investing here.

Equinix fuels AI, cloud, and connectivity growth across Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The latest commitment to expand its Hong Kong footprint marks another milestone in Equinix's long-standing presence in the city. “Equinix has been a trusted partner in Hong Kong over the past 25 years,” Hon said. “Our development has followed successive shifts from the rise of interconnection to cloud, hybrid architectures and now AI.”

Digital Infrastructure for a Changing Business Environment

Equinix provides carrier neutral data centres and interconnection services that bring together enterprises, cloud providers, network operators, financial institutions and digital service providers. “Our digital infrastructure, data centre footprint and interconnected ecosystems empower innovations,” Hon said. She explained that these facilities enable organisations to connect directly and securely with partners and multiple clouds, helping reduce latency, improve resilience and support digital transformation.

“Companies can build private, low-latency connections between clouds, networks, applications, partners and end users,” she added. This gives enterprises more flexibility with hybrid and multi-cloud architectures. More than 10,500 companies — including over 60 percent of the Fortune 500 — host critical infrastructure in Equinix data centres worldwide.

Hong Kong as a Regional Growth Platform

Equinix established Hong Kong as its Asia Pacific regional headquarters in 2002, recognising the city’s role as an international financial and business centre and a link between the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world. These factors continue to support investment as cloud, interconnection and AI demand grows.

It now operates six data centres in Hong Kong and employs approximately 300 professionals. The local team supports regional strategy, sales, customer success and partner engagement, while operations teams focus on the reliability and security of the data centres.

Investing in AI and Sustainable Growth

The company’s latest Hong Kong investment responds to the need to support higher-density AI workloads and improve the efficiency of digital infrastructure. The US$124 million first phase of HK6 provides 1,000 cabinets. “Representing our single largest investment in Hong Kong over the past decade, HK6 is a clear testament to our long-term commitment to this market and our conviction in its trajectory,” Hon emphasised.

The facility incorporates liquid-cooling technology and combines dense interconnection with low-latency access to Hong Kong and GBA ecosystems. Its direct connectivity to the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park supports access to startups and tenants across the GBA. Through the AI Discovery Hub with HPE and NVIDIA, enterprises can build, test, validate and scale AI applications before full deployment.

“Combining seamless GBA connectivity, a world-class AI testing environment, and AI-ready and interconnection-rich infrastructure, HK6 provides a cohesive foundation for secure data mobility and high-performance AI, enabling businesses to scale AI applications with confidence,” Hon noted.
