City’s deep cultural heritage enriched by new artistic talent

After three years selling her unique style of art to Hong Kong buyers, New Zealand-born Jane Mason realised that to take her business to the next level she needed to be at the heart of the action. Ms Mason spoke to Invest Hong Kong about why Hong Kong was the ideal choice for both her creative and business side.

“I’ve had a close relationship with Hong Kong for some time because many of my clients are based here,” explains Mason, whose artwork already graces the walls of some of the city’s leading hotels, restaurants and clubs, as well as private collections. “So I was initially attracted here to be close to these clients.”

But Mason soon fell under the Hong Kong spell. In August, she set up a studio in the city, Jane Mason Studios (Asia) Limited. “My style of art is very individual and often highly interactive. I like to get together with the client, architect or interior designer at the earliest stage to get a really clear understanding of what inspires them,” explains Mason.

From a business perspective, Mason believes Hong Kong is a leading light in Asia. “There’s a rich pool of artists, architects and designers, as well as a sophisticated and discerning community of art-lovers.” On a personal level, she says she’s been inspired artistically by the city’s rich heritage, fast pace and stunning natural scenery. “Hong Kong is Asia’s New York, or London.”

Making the move could not have been easier

“Having decided to set up in Hong Kong I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to set up and do business here," says Mason. “This pro-business ethos was matched by the diligence, enthusiasm and advice I received from the team at Invest Hong Kong. They gave invaluable advice and guided me through the process in a simple and practical manner,” she adds.

Settling into Hong Kong life was a family affair for Mason, who is here with her husband and child. “It was important to make sure we retained the balance of lifestyle, location and work. We’ve chosen to live far removed from the familiar image of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers in a green and spacious environment only 20 minutes from Central and a short hop to the beach or country park. Perfect.”
