The Swiss community in Hong Kong
Swiss companies and entrepreneurs have been
doing business in Hong Kong for 150 years.Despite their very different
heritage and locations in the world, Switzerland and Hong Kong are
similar – they are both a regional and international financial
centres and are heavily service oriented.
Which Swiss companies?
The over 160 Swiss firms doing business in Hong Kong represent a
diverse range of sectors including: banking, chemicals,
pharmaceuticals, business and professional services, electronics,
foods, freight forwarding, inspection, insurance, machinery,
engineering, textiles and garments, watches and jewellery, and trading.
Switzerland was Hong Kong's 14th largest foreign investor in 2002,
contributing US$2.4 billion.
In 2003, the two-way trade between Switzerland and Hong Kong totalled
some US$4 billion, with the most significant items being jewellery and
precious metals and watches and clocks.
Hong Kong and beyond
Many enterprises look to Hong Kong to serve their greater Mainland and
Asian business. According to the Government Census and Statistics
Department some 110 regional headquarters and offices for companies
from Switzerland were located in Hong Kong as at mid 2006.
Swiss people in Hong Kong
There are some 1,300 Swiss nationals in Hong Kong. There are strong
cultural links between Switzerland and Hong Kong, which bridge the
areas of lifestyle, commerce, education too. Most recently a
